Mary (Wojdan) Bortniak, 95, of Herkimer, NY, life long resident of the area, passed away on Tuesday, March 17, 2015 in Galax, VA.
She was born February 1, 1920 in Little Falls, NY, daughter of the late John and Mary (Bator) Wojdan. Mary was raised in and attended Little Falls schools.
Mary worked many years at various manufacturing facilities in Little Falls including National Automotive Fibres on parachutes during the WW II and various shoe and dress shops. She was last employed at Little Frocks Dress and retired in 1982.
Her marriage to Andrew Bortniak took place on October 19, 1946 at the Holy Spirit Polish National Catholic Church in Little Falls, NY. Following her marriage, they lived in Little Falls and then settled in the Town of Herkimer, NY, in 1954, living there full time until the past few years. She spent the last 6 years mainly with her son and his family in FL and VA until the time of her passing. Mary enjoyed outdoor work, gardening, cooking, traveling, reading and being a home maker.
Survivors include her son Donald Bortniak, daughter-in-law Liz (Franz) Bortniak and grandson Jake Bortniak all from Galax, VA, grandson Jason Bortniak and his wife, Jessica Gulmi from Manhattan, NY, granddaughter Katie Bortniak from Wexford, PA; niece Gail Wojdan, nephew John Wojdan Jr., his wife Barbara and their son, John Thomas all from Little Falls, NY; nephew Forrest James (Wojdan), his wife Helen and their children, Valerie, Paulina and Kevin all from Aliso Viejo, CA; a sister-in-law Anna (Bortniak) Allen and her husband, Edward “Skip†from Herkimer, NY/Galax, VA.
She was predeceased by her husband Andrew Bortniak, daughter-in-law Kathleen (Varano) Bortniak, brother John Wojdan and his wife, Rita (Dorey), brother James Mitch Wojdan and his wife, Mary (Forrest), sister-in-law Christine (Bortniak) Peknik and her husband Daniel, sister-in-law Mary (Bortniak) Myers and her husband, Robert.
Funeral services will be held at the Chapman – Moser Funeral Home, Inc, 42 N. Ann St. Little Falls, NY 13365 on Saturday, May 2, 2015 at 9:30 am and at 10:00 am from the Hoy Spirit Polish National Catholic Church with Reverend Rafal Dadello, officiating. Interment will follow at the Polish National Catholic Cemetery, Rt. 5, town of Herkimer, NY. Family and friends may call at the Chapman – Moser Funeral Home, Inc. on Friday, May 1, 2015 from 6 to 8 PM. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Vincent A. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the Polish National Catholic Church, 618 E. Gansevoort St., Little Falls, NY 13365 in memory of Mary. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
